Card nights in Bangkok are mostly small and informal: a few tables in a board game café, a back room in a pub, a regular group in someone's condo common room. They are easy to join once you know where to look.

Where groups meet

Board game cafés are the most reliable place to start. Many have a games library with several card games and staff who will teach the rules. Some host weekly open nights where you can turn up alone and be seated at a table. Expat community groups on social media and on Meetup also organise regular evenings, often in pubs along Sukhumvit.

Groups come and go, so check a venue's own page or social account for the current schedule before you travel.

What people play

The games depend on who is at the table. Bridge clubs meet on fixed evenings and take their game seriously. Groups with players from Russia, Ukraine and Central Asia often play Durak, a fast trick-taking game where the aim is not to be the last player holding cards. Modern card games such as Exploding Kittens, Sushi Go and The Mind are common in cafés because they are quick to teach.

Etiquette at a new table

• Arrive at the start rather than mid-game.
• Ask which house rules the table uses. Durak, in particular, has many variants.
• Buy a drink or pay the café's table fee. That is how the venue keeps hosting.
• Play for fun. Thai law restricts gambling, and venues will not want stakes at the table.
